Most standard residential garage door springs are rated for approximately 10,000 cycles — one
cycle being one full open-and-close movement. At two cycles per day, that’s roughly 13–14 years;
at four cycles per day (two cars, two uses each), closer to 7 years. Heavier doors, wider
temperature swings, and inadequate lubrication can shorten spring life. Springs that are
approaching 10,000 cycles may start to show coil gaps, creaking, or slow door movement before
they snap.
We don’t recommend it. Garage door springs — particularly torsion springs — are under extreme
tension. An improperly released spring can snap back with enough force to cause serious injury.
DIY spring replacement is one of the most common causes of garage door-related injuries. The
cost of professional spring replacement is modest compared to the risk involved.
Springs have a finite cycle life and will eventually fail from fatigue — this is normal wear.
Contributing factors include inadequate lubrication (dry springs wear faster), temperature
extremes, rust or corrosion, the door being out of balance (putting more load on one spring), and
being the wrong size for the door weight. Springs rarely break at a convenient time because
they’re under the most stress when the door is in motion.
If you have a two-spring torsion system and one spring breaks, we recommend replacing both.
The second spring has logged the same number of cycles as the broken one and is likely to fail
within weeks or months. Replacing both at the same time also lets us set matching tension on
both sides, which is important for balanced door operation. The additional labor cost is minimal
since the door is already being serviced.
The most likely culprit is a spring that snapped overnight or during the last use. Springs often
break while the door is in motion — you may have heard a loud bang. When a torsion spring
breaks, the door’s full weight falls onto the opener, which isn’t designed to lift without spring
assist, so the opener runs but the door stays down or barely moves. This is the correct behavior —
